Prevent the Summer Slide with STEM

Thanks to Best Buy for sponsoring this post, opinions are 100% my own

Every summer I have the best intentions of helping my son avoid the summer slide. (when kids forget a lot of what they have learned the previous year during the summer) My son ended last school year on a really high note, so I was surprised when early school year testing showed he had slipped quite a bit. Since he is going into 3rd grade, I am really trying to stay on top of it this summer.

I got the workbooks and a bunch of library books. (full disclosure: I did the same stuff last year and enforced it for maybe a week, so we will see how this goes) My son loves to read, so I am not worried about that too much. I know he is not a fan of the writing and worksheets, but it is a necessary evil… or is it?

When Best Buy offered to send me the Jimu Robot by UBTECH, I knew it would be the perfect summer activity for my son. He loves BattleBots, so he was excited to have the chance to build his very own robot. I was happy since I know this toy is a STEM product and it will help my son learn through play. (STEM stands for science, technology, engineering and math)

I have to admit when I saw all the boxes in the set, I was worried that I may be the one building a robot instead of my son! However, once we downloaded the free app I realized he would be good to go. This kit either builds the robot or the dog and Hudson decided on the robot. We worked together for the first few instructions and then he did the rest on his own. The app makes it extremely clear what to do and the step-by-step breakdown was really easy to follow. Hudson loved working on it all by himself and there was a graph at the bottom that let him see how far along he was.

Once he was finished, we charged the bot and then he was ready to go. You control your robot using the app. It comes with programmed moves and then you can code to create custom movements. Hudson has been having a blast coming up with new movements and it gives the toy longevity since there are so many ways to play.

If you want to check out the full line of UBTECH products be sure to go to Best Buy’s website. Do you do anything to help prevent the summer slide?

Hudson is loving his Jimu robot by @ubtechrobotics! He was able to build it all by himself and now he’s learning coding by teaching the robot new moves! Thanks @bestbuy! #ad

It is really a cool toy, my son brought it with us on vacation and all the boys were creating code for it
