My first family favorites post was a hit, so I decided to add a mid-month version focusing only on books. I love to read. Always have. Then when I got my Kindle… my reading obsession hit a whole new level.
Now, I love reading to my kids and Hudson looks forward to his books every night before bed. (if he is not listening I can even threaten him with “You’re about to lose a book!”) I think it is so cute when Mila waddles over with a book, hands it to me, then plops down on my lap as if to say “Ok, you can start now…”
So here are the books we are loving right now!
Lauren:
The Language of Flowers by Vanessa Diffenbaugh
I just finished this book up this week & I loved it. It was for a book club, but I had it on my digital library wish list for awhile. I liked the style of writing from the very beginning, which made it easy to get into. It is about a girl Victoria, who lived basically her entire life in foster care. She has a host of issues & is kind of crazy, but I love a bad girl. The book goes back and forth between her childhood & adulthood. There are plenty of tense moments and times when I feel this girl really is not going to make it. Does she ever get her happy ending? I’m not telling. Read the book.
Hudson:
National Geographic Angry Birds Star Wars by Amy Briggs
Hudson first saw this book at his school book fair, but I refused to buy it since I was trying to get him into early readers that he could read on his own, and this was way too advanced. A few weeks later he came home with the book after he suckered Grandma into getting it for him. Well, turns out it was a great purchase (thanks, Grandma!) since he has been obsessed with it ever since. This book is a mix of fictional stories about the game, Angry Birds Star Wars, with some real science mixed in. For example, it talks about the a planet that is in the game, but then compares the landscape & atmosphere of the fake planet to real planets. I was surprised by how much educational information is in this book, and Hudson has learned a lot from it. Way to go, National Geographic.
Mila:
Babies by Gyo Fujikawa
My mom got this board book for Hudson when he was born, since it was my favorite book when I was a baby. It was originally published in 1963, and I think it is just the cutest book ever. Hudson never really got into it, but Mila is obsessed. It is by far her favorite book of the moment. She loves to ‘meow’ at the kitties in the book, and she always kisses the baby that is crying when I say “It’s okay baby, don’t cry.” It is the perfect size for her to carry around and tough enough that she can look through it without destroying the pages.

She refused to smile in the 30 seconds I gave myself to take these pictures, but I swear she loves the book. |
My husband only reads dietitian journals, nutritional studies and crap like that… so I am leaving him out of this. (you’re welcome)
