Why I Love Social Media

WorkingMomMagic.com

Social media. Most of us have a love/hate relationship with it. On one hand, it can be a definite time sucker, there is always a ‘new’ form social media popping up and sometimes social media as a whole can feel a bit overwhelming. (especially for bloggers) On the other hand, there are times when I am reminded just how awesome social media is. Like this weekend, on my birthday.

Birthday dinner with the fam!
I heard from people I grew up with, coworkers I haven’t talked to in years, distant relatives… you name it. People who have made an imprint in my life in one way or another decided to take a moment out of their day to write on my ‘wall’ after seeing my birthday alert pop up on their page. Did it take a lot of effort on their part? Probably not. But it made me really, really happy. I was so appreciative to read all their messages, some simple, others heartfelt, many with a quick message reminding me of an inside joke we have shared or funny moment.
Jessie & I have been friends since middle school, and she is amazing.
Here’s Jess, me and our friend Kelly… with all of our kids just last month!

It’s just one of the reasons why I love social media so much. I am friends with people on there that I have known since I moved to Florida in 2nd grade. Some of them, I haven’t spoken with in person since 5th grade or so. However, I have re-connected with others personally… thanks to social media. We are all busy, and seeing each other face to face isn’t always easy, but that’s okay. Just because we lose touch with people, doesn’t mean they don’t still have a special place in your heart.

A friend of mine posted this on her page recently, I am still in touch with ALL these fabulous
girls in one way or another… thanks to social media!
With social media, I have seen the happiness in pictures of a old friend who just got married, I got to see my best friend in middle school’s daughter on her 1st day of kindergarten, I get to be a part of every milestone, death and celebration… and that is really amazing. The people I grew up with played a major part in my life, and I am so thankful that I can still be a part of theirs. (even if it is only the social media version)

This post makes me so happy because last night as I was posting about Miss America, I felt connected! Otherwise it would have just been me watching by myself feeling lonely… Yay social!

I love social media for this exact reason. When I ask people if they have FB and they say no, I ask myself "don't they want to keep up with friends and family?" ๐Ÿ™‚ Glad you got to connect with your friend!

I found a one of my best friends from elementary school on FB. She moved in 6th grade and it was great to reconnect even if I haven't actually seen her in years.

Social media is such a fabulous way to stay connected to people you don't live by! I have also found it really helpful with family that I only see like once a year because we don't have to spend all of our time together catching up on the past year since we've stayed up to date on social media!

I love FB because of the reasons you mentioned above – it's a fabulous way to keep in touch with longtime friends who you haven't seen in years but still really care about. Instagram is awesome because via the images shared you're able to take a peek into what life is like for people all over the world. And I love, love Pinterest. But I still haven't grown a fondness for Twitter or Google +.

That is the best part of social media. I love reconnecting with people. You think you've lost them, then BAM they're back in your life…even if it's just through messages and pictures, it's still awesome.

this is such a tough subject for me because i love it so much for some specific reasons but i really think it could possibly play a part in ruining society! plus, i can NOT keep up with it… it can be sooo all consuming! and my husband gets super mad at me when i spend any time on it in his presence – especially this periscope stuff!

I do agree that all the social media out there is kind of screwing up interpersonal relationships.. and I do worry what it will be like when my kids are teens… scary! However, I do love staying in touch with old friends and meeting new ones! ๐Ÿ™‚

It does have it's perks ๐Ÿ˜€ I can only imagine what it would have been like to have this while we were in high school. As much as it frustrates me, I'm glad we have it now. Distance from those we care about means (almost) nothing anymore.

Thanks for your post. I enjoyed hearing about the impact social media has had in your life. I was able to reconnect with several of my high school and college friends. Sometimes it seems shallow but it's better than no connection. And, it can lead to stronger bonds down the road.

I have a love hate relationship. I feel I check it way too much and I'm not sure the pros outweigh the cons in my life. But it's a great way to keep up with family.. especially when they live in a different continent!
