We all know sleep is important. Really, really important. As mothers, we are constantly focused on making sure our children get enough sleep. Do they have good sleep habits? Are they getting to bed early enough? Should I let them cry it out? Put them down sleepy but awake? But what about YOU. Have you evaluated your sleep habits recently?

Did you know not getting enough sleep as an adult can cause major health issues, kill your sex drive, make you depressed and cause you to look older? (read more about it here)

I recently decided to focus on getting more sleep. I have been feeling rundown and stressed out and I know it all ties back to my lack of quality shut eye.

Here are a 4 tips that have been helping me get more sleep:

Set a Bedtime: We set a bedtime for our kids, why not for ourselves? After a busy day I am totally guilty of wanting to just stay awake to relax, even though I know I should go to sleep. Those short hours after the kids go to sleep is the only ‘ME’ time I have all day. It is nice to mindlessly look at my phone, reconnect with my husband and catch up on all those fabulous reality shows on my TiVo. But I know I am paying the price. So now, I set a bedtime for myself. The time varies each night, and depends on how tired I am feeling, how I felt when I woke up that morning and how much I have to do the next day. Now I set a time.. and stick with it.

Put Away Your Phone: I have started charging my phone in the kitchen at night, so I am not even a little tempted to look at it. This may not be necessary for everyone, but once I get in bed, I grab my phone and before I know it… 40 minutes have passed since I am watching Periscope or YouTube makeup tutorials. So now I just keep my phone completely out of the bedroom and my sweet husband wakes me up instead of my alarm. (which I prefer anyway)

Wind Down: Do something to help ‘quiet’ your mind. I like to write in my thankful journal or read a book for 10-15 minutes. That helps me to de-stress, since I tend to over-think everything when I am trying to fall asleep. Try not to watch TV

Set the Stage: Make sure your bedroom is quiet and set up the way you like it. Room temperature, the level of darkness and how many pillows and blankets are all personal decisions… but make sure you create a sleep-worthy space that works for you. Probably the most important of all these factors is a good BED! When you think about the amount of time you spend in bed, you quickly realize what a good investment it is to buy a quality mattress.

This week, I am getting a brand new Sealy Posturepedic Hybrid mattress and I can’t wait! It has the best of both worlds, since it is a half foam/half springs hybrid. The top half of the mattress has cooling gel memory foam for body-conforming comfort and reduced motion transfer. (which my husband will LOVE since I move around a lot in my sleep) I also feel good knowing that all Sealy mattresses have a 10 year warranty and are designed and built in the United States.

Now that you have these tips and tricks to help you get more sleep, how about some new pillows? Thanks to Sealy, I am giving away 5 Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-Essential support pillows! These pillows (which retail for $80) will help you sleep in comfort with aligning support for your head, neck and shoulders. Plus, who doesn’t love the super cool Tempur-Pedic foam?! Remember, there will be 5 winners, so you have even a better chance of winning one of these fabulous pillows! Good luck!

I try to make a habit of leaving my phone of my room. I find if I go on it right before I go to bed I totally get sucked in — in fact, it happened last night! I sometimes use my phone as an alarm, in which case I put it on vibrate so I don't hear any notifications.

I have a bedtime of 10 pm (Usually I'm in bed around that time) but when I don't go to sleep then it's because I'm checking my phone. That's usually my biggest sleep problem.. But I could use a new pillow.

I really need to start putting my phone away at night, but it is so hard! I feel like it's the only time of day I have to catch up on anything, but then I end up going to bed way later than I wanted. The struggle is real, but I have to bite the bullet and set it in another room.

LOVE the tips! I really do notice a difference in myself when I'm not sleeping enough, when I am sleeping enough AND when when I'm sleeping well + enough. As much as I hate to, I think I'd also have to add 'cutting out caffeine' to the list of things that help me sleep better. I do drink coffee daily now, but during the periods where I cut out caffeine for a few weeks, once I go to bed, I fall asleep within 10 minutes.
