Ice Balloon Boulders

So much fun for the kids

We have been soaking up every last drop of summer, and this weekend we came up with a fun activity, that is a spin off of our Ice Break game. It uses balloons and turned out awesome!

Hudson loves freezing his toys in ice and breaking them out… which is what last year’s post was all about. It’s been a few months since we have done this, and Hudson mentioned he wanted to freeze stuff this weekend. I was trying to think of a fun way to switch up this game, and I remembered something I read when I was planning his birthday party. (I was looking for fun water balloon ideas) I saw a pin or something that showed someone using frozen water balloons as a way to chill drinks.. and then when they melt the kids can throw them at each other.

So I thought what if we stuffed his little toys in a balloon, filled it with water and froze it? Then we could cut off the balloon part and have boulder ice cubes, with toys stuck inside! The best part of this idea… is that is ACTUALLY WORKED! It was so much fun and it turned out so well, we did a few batches this weekend.

We froze small toys inside, and I used regular tap water, so they turned out more frosty. (If you use purified water it will freeze totally clear, which is pretty cool, too!) We took them outside, cut open the balloon, and the ice boulders popped right out! Hudson decided to chisel the toys out with a pair of kids scissors and it worked pretty well. Mila just liked to feel the ice and had her brother “save” a few of her toys for her.

I know it sounds simple, but it is a lot of fun for the kids and super cheap!! Hudson thought the little boulders turned out so well, that next time we are going to freeze “pins” using milk cartons and play a game of ice bowling!! I will let you know how it turns out!

So creative! And ice bowling sounds awesome! I might have to do this with my son, he loves covering his toys in play-doh and saving them by digging them out, I wonder if he'd enjoy saving them from ice boulders! Pinning this!

Yes Mila just sort of rolls it around and rubs it with her hands.. I also gave her a kids plastic hammer to hammer it. 🙂

She just rolls it around on the patio (it melts pretty quick thanks to our weather here) and she also had a plastic hammer from Hudson's toy construction kit… but she liked just feeling the ice better. (and licking it)

Thank you! Yes it is pretty fun and since the toy usually freezes close to an edge, it isnt too hard to get it out. (esp in Florida where it melts pretty quick!)

What a fun and creative idea! I love that you can also use existing toys and stuff without having to buy new. The only thing is I'm in California now, so "water" play tends to be limited!!

This is the best kind of activity- one that is simple to prepare, but allows the kids to be creative. I just found you on Mommy A to Z's Blog Hop, and I'm looking forward to following you and reading all about your other great ideas! 🙂

Oh yes! These are so much fun! I like to make them in the winter and add food colouring to them… then place them in the yard which is covered with glistening, white snow. It looks so pretty in the sunshine.

    Such a great activity.

Thanks for sharing (and for linking up to the #SHINEbloghop).

    Wishing you a lovely day.
