Books my Kids are Loving in June

Here's what my kids are currently reading

I had big summer reading plans with my kids.. I signed my son up for the Scholastic summer reading program. I wanted to get a bunch of new books for them to read from the library. However, our summer reading has not gotten off to the stellar start I had imagined.

For the first week of summer break Hudson felt like staying up late to watch his favorite shows. (which is something he doesn’t usually get to do during the school year) So I’ve been letting him stay up late. Watch a BUNCH of TV. (definitely too much) I’ve been making him hot chocolate with lots of extra marshmallows. (a sugary drink past 8pm usually doesn’t fly here) But it is SUMMER. And he’s 6.

Mila has been joining her brother in the late night indulgence. She takes naps at daycare, even though she really doesn’t need them. (she is like her brother, who also dropped naps early) She is never tired anymore at her usual bedtime. So we have all been staying up late, hanging out. I’m sure we will get back on track soon, but for now we are in a summer state of mind.

So for this month, they each only have one book each that they are REALLY loving.

Mila:
Another Monster at the End of This Book
She actually likes this book more than the original Monster at the End of This Book. This may have even made it on my blog before, since both kids really love this book. She laughs and tries to imitate all the Elmo parts. This is a fun one to read together.

Hudson:
Pirates
We got this years ago at a book fair being held at his daycare and he loved it then and he still loves it today. He is currently going through a pirate phase (again) and recently told me he wants a pirate party for his 7th birthday. We have a few Usborne books and they are all really good. This one is a bit strange though since it talks about how pirates would steal and kill people during battles. One part even talks about how dead pirates were hung up in pirate cages so everyone would see that being a pirate was bad. Ummmm… sweet dreams?

So that’s our short list for this month, hopefully we get back on track with reading soon or my big summer reading plan will be a major bust!

I have a weakness for children's books (it's probably the English teacher in me!) and these look cute!

I am obsessed with kids books! I love when I find a really fun, different one to read with the kids. (But I do prefer them without pirate cages.. but if my son likes it then who am I to judge! ha!)

Do you have a service you get all of these fun books from or do you just find them randomly at the store? I love these posts:)

Lol to Hudson's book. But the interest in it makes perfect sense even though it makes my stomach drop a little. We were just at the park and my not-yet-two-year-old was pretending a dinosaur was chasing him and then air stabbing him and yelling, 'Kill!' I had a moment where I thought I should tell him we don't say, 'Kill' but instead decided to jump right in and also praise him for imaginative play. lol. Life with boys…

Every time Hudson says kill I tell him not to say that word.. haha.. sometimes he is like "well then what else can I say?"

Thanks for sharing! I bet my toddler would LOVE the monster book. I find the best random yet cool old school books at thrift stores. Sometimes you can first edition classics for like $0.50!

I have big hopes for a summer filled with books too, but when we are outside all day, I always forget! The boys favorite book right now is the "Love you forever" book. When they say "I love you," they now say the entire little poem from that book. So cute. Thanks for the reminder to keep reading!

My jaw dropped at the picture of the cage for dead pirates. That's something my daughter would totally be in to! She loves scary things! I'm starting to plan my kids' dual birthday party and I love te pirate theme idea! I just don't think it will fly. Most likely Disney Princesses all the way…

Speaking of books..I'm busy packing all mine and the kids up…and they are HEAVY!!
