I had big summer reading plans with my kids.. I signed my son up for the Scholastic summer reading program. I wanted to get a bunch of new books for them to read from the library. However, our summer reading has not gotten off to the stellar start I had imagined.
For the first week of summer break Hudson felt like staying up late to watch his favorite shows. (which is something he doesn’t usually get to do during the school year) So I’ve been letting him stay up late. Watch a BUNCH of TV. (definitely too much) I’ve been making him hot chocolate with lots of extra marshmallows. (a sugary drink past 8pm usually doesn’t fly here) But it is SUMMER. And he’s 6.
Mila has been joining her brother in the late night indulgence. She takes naps at daycare, even though she really doesn’t need them. (she is like her brother, who also dropped naps early) She is never tired anymore at her usual bedtime. So we have all been staying up late, hanging out. I’m sure we will get back on track soon, but for now we are in a summer state of mind.
So for this month, they each only have one book each that they are REALLY loving.
Mila:
Another Monster at the End of This Book
She actually likes this book more than the original Monster at the End of This Book. This may have even made it on my blog before, since both kids really love this book. She laughs and tries to imitate all the Elmo parts. This is a fun one to read together.
Hudson:
Pirates
We got this years ago at a book fair being held at his daycare and he loved it then and he still loves it today. He is currently going through a pirate phase (again) and recently told me he wants a pirate party for his 7th birthday. We have a few Usborne books and they are all really good. This one is a bit strange though since it talks about how pirates would steal and kill people during battles. One part even talks about how dead pirates were hung up in pirate cages so everyone would see that being a pirate was bad. Ummmm… sweet dreams?
So that’s our short list for this month, hopefully we get back on track with reading soon or my big summer reading plan will be a major bust!
I have a weakness for children's books (it's probably the English teacher in me!) and these look cute!
I am obsessed with kids books! I love when I find a really fun, different one to read with the kids. (But I do prefer them without pirate cages.. but if my son likes it then who am I to judge! ha!)
Do you have a service you get all of these fun books from or do you just find them randomly at the store? I love these posts:)
No I have TONS of kids books!! Many were passed down from friends and family and I am a sucker for any sort of book fair. haha
My daughter is only five months old but already has a passion for reading! I can't wait until she is old enough to have a favorite book.
It is so much fun when they enjoy reading! have a wonderful weekend and thanks for stopping over!
I need to make a trip to the library and pick up some new books for them to read this summer! Thanks for the recommendations!
I do too.. hopefully this weekend I will fit it in. ๐
Ugh, i REALLY need to step up the summer reading. That is one of those things that is so important to maintain during the summer and I know that from past experiences. You just gave me a kick in the pants–i needed that ๐ Your little ones are too cute.
It is SO easy to start slacking, we are totally guilty. I am going to try and get to the library this weekend and refocus.
Great picks. I love that you put together these list. I forward it to my sister– who has a son your sons age.
I know.. I hope your nephews enjoy the suggestions
Lol to Hudson's book. But the interest in it makes perfect sense even though it makes my stomach drop a little. We were just at the park and my not-yet-two-year-old was pretending a dinosaur was chasing him and then air stabbing him and yelling, 'Kill!' I had a moment where I thought I should tell him we don't say, 'Kill' but instead decided to jump right in and also praise him for imaginative play. lol. Life with boys…
Every time Hudson says kill I tell him not to say that word.. haha.. sometimes he is like "well then what else can I say?"
The first monster at the end of this book is a favorite around here, I'll have to pick up the second one for some fun summer reading!
I love the first one too.. its one of my favorites!
Oh my goodness…I didn't know there was a sequel to the monster at the end of the book. That was one of my favorites as a kid.
YES! My mom found it for my son since the first one was my favorite and we have that one too. She was so excited when she saw it in the store! ha!
I just left the bookstore with my daughter as she has a long list of books that she wants to read this summer.
That is awesome! I hope you guys have a fun summer full of reading!
ooo thanks for sharing! I'll have to check those out!
Thanks for stopping over and have a great weekend!! ๐
Thanks for sharing! I bet my toddler would LOVE the monster book. I find the best random yet cool old school books at thrift stores. Sometimes you can first edition classics for like $0.50!
Yes it is such a fun book! I need to check out thrift store books.. that is a great idea!
I have big hopes for a summer filled with books too, but when we are outside all day, I always forget! The boys favorite book right now is the "Love you forever" book. When they say "I love you," they now say the entire little poem from that book. So cute. Thanks for the reminder to keep reading!
It is SO easy to slack off on reading.. we are totally guilty of it and summer just started!! When I went to write this post.. I was like.. wait a minute… we haven't really been reading!!
My jaw dropped at the picture of the cage for dead pirates. That's something my daughter would totally be in to! She loves scary things! I'm starting to plan my kids' dual birthday party and I love te pirate theme idea! I just don't think it will fly. Most likely Disney Princesses all the way…
I know!! I always skip that page and he gets annoyed. I'm like "I dont like it, it freaks me out" haha
I'm holding off on getting new books for mine until we move…but these are too cute. I think my almost 2 year old will love the monsters one and they are both really starting to get into pirates too, although the cage…uh, no!!! Speaking of books..I'm busy packing all mine and the kids up…and they are HEAVY!!
So heavy.. and we have waaay too many. (especially since they get sick of most of them pretty quickly) I need to make a library trip, but I havent made it over there yet! Sorry you are packing.. I HATE packing!
My daughter is a total bookworm! I'm hoping this whole bookworm thing sticks because it's awesome I don't have to force her to read lol
I kind of have to make my son read, he is not too crazy about it… but I am persistent!! ๐ I hope you are having a great week!
Fun post!! I love seeing happy little readers!

Yes this is one of my favorite monthly posts.. even though it was a bit thin this month!
We've been looking for some great new books to read ๐
I am always looking for new ones too!! I need to hit up the library soon! ๐
hot chocolate during SUMMER? that's funny. couldn't be done where I live. it's 115 today.
haha well its about 100 here in south florida.. but it doesnt matter when we are snuggling up on the couch at night! We love hot chocolate year round!! ๐
My son loves There's a Monster at the End of this Book, so we are going to have to get the next one!
I like the first one better (so does my son) but for some reason my daughter loves the 2nd one. ๐ Have a great week!
We're not reading that much either, but we have the app for Monster at the End of this Book. So cute!
I have heard that app is good.. I need to check it out since Mila loves books apps.
oh I remember the monster at the end of this book from childhood. I've got to go find that one or the next one apparently. Haven't seen that one yet!
