When I had my first child, my mom gave me a super fancy DSLR camera. I was so excited to have it, since I wanted to capture every single precious moment with my sweet, little man. Fast-forward 6 years later… and we rarely take it out of its camera bag. I would rather use my cell phone over that fancy camera ANY day.

Here are 6 reasons why I prefer my Samsung Galaxy Avant over my DSLR:
1. My phone is always with me: You never know when a picture perfect moment will strike, and there is no way I am bringing that heavy DSLR with me everywhere just in case. But I ALWAYS have my phone with me! Not only does my Galaxy Avant have a 5MP camera, it also has a bunch of different modes (auto-focus, panorama, night mode and more) that help me get the perfect shot. (and it takes videos!) I never miss a chance to get a cute pic of the kids, since I never leave the house without my phone.

How cute are they?? |
2. I can edit the pictures instantly: There are so many awesome photo editing apps in the Google Play store… and a lot of them are free! A few of my favorite are VSCO Cam, Pixlr and Snapseed.
3. It is easier to share pictures with friends and family: I love that my Samsung makes it so easy to share pictures. The share features are built right into the phone. I can upload my pictures directly to my dropbox account or send an email. I also like uploading my pictures with photo sharing apps, like Snapfish. With my digital camera I would have to upload them to my computer, then edit on using a desktop editor, create folders and rename .jpg’s… ugh.

You KNOW Grandma had me email her this one! |
4. Social Media: Helloooooo! If you know anything about me, you know I am social media obsessed… especially when it comes to Instagram! I can instantly upload to Instagram with my Galaxy Avant, either using the direct share option or through he app. Can’t do that with my DSLR.

She is saying, “NOOOO… not ANOTHER Instagram selfie!” |
5. I can instantly create a slideshow: Since I also have a Samsung TV, I can instantly stream my photos though my television… and it’s completely wireless. For Mother’s Day we had some family over for brunch and I took lots of awesome pictures. Near the end of the day, when everyone was relaxing, we popped the pics up on our TV, so they could see how they all turned out. (and tell me their favorites to send to them!)
6. It’s cheaper: My digital camera was not only super expensive, but every single additional lens and accessory was also pricey. I recently switched over to the Walmart Family Mobile plan, and it is the best deal out there. For only $29.88 a month (for the first line) I get the Unlimited Talk, Text & Data service plan which includes up to 1G of 4G LTE data. And get this… NO contracts! It was so easy, I ordered my phone on Walmart.com and it was shipped to the store the very next day! I picked it up and walked back to the cell phone area, (where all the TV’s & electronics are) and I was in and out in less than 20 minutes! It was INSANE how quick the process was. I just bought a SIM card for $25, they hooked up my phone, and I was out the door without paying a single service charge or activation fee. With the 4G LTE service, I know I won’t miss a moment of summer fun, since the coverage is awesome!

Another picture perfect moment captured with my phone |
People are always shocked when I tell them I use my cell phone for all the pictures you see on this blog, but can you really blame me? What are some of your favorite photo editing apps? (I am always looking for new ones!)
(function(i,s,o,g,r,a,m){i[‘GoogleAnalyticsObject’]=r;i[r]=i[r]||function(){
(i[r].q=i[r].q||[]).push(arguments)},i[r].l=1*new Date();a=s.createElement(o),
m=s.getElementsByTagName(o)[0];a.async=1;a.src=g;m.parentNode.insertBefore(a,m)
})(window,document,’script’,’//www.google-analytics.com/analytics.js’,’ga’);
ga(‘create’, ‘UA-49936077-1’, ‘auto’);
ga(‘send’, ‘pageview’);
I just bought a "fancy" camera, but I will still probably use my phone as the GO TO as much as possible! I'll save the fancy for special occasions. I do need to upgrade my phone though…they keeps making these things better and better…my iPhone4 is like a dinosaur now! haha
I tend to keep my electronics FOREVER as well.. we still have an ORIGINAL Ipad at our house, it doesnt even have a camera on it! ๐
Amazing! What a great deal!!! I also agree that the best camera is the one you have with you.
I seriously couldnt believe how cheap and quick it was.. esp sicne I went on a weekend to set it up.
I use my phone for my pictures too!! …which you can totally tell. I need to upgrade phones ASAP and will look into this one. Thank you!

Yes phones are really good now, and the editing apps make all the difference! I use my phone for all my blog pictures.. I mean everything!!
Totally! I'm the same way – I love to share pics right away from my phone. My husband loves his big fancy camera though – prob because he has a flip phone.
I find the phone to be the easiest way to take and share pictures. I really need a new phone. I will be checking out the Galaxy Avant.
I prefer my DSLR, but I hardly ever use it, either! I take almost all my photos with my iPhone 6!
I'm so excited to know the editing apps you use-your pictures are always great! I had a regular camera when my daughter was a baby-what a pain to get them uploaded, edited, etc! I love using my phone-as you said, it's always with me!!
Yes, the editing apps make a huge difference!! I am also obsessed with 'a beautiful mess' app, but I wanted to only include my favorite free ones in this post, I think that one is only .99 cents though ๐
I have to agree that phones are easier to carry around but for better quality, I prefer my DSLR. I can see that once you have kids though, it would be difficult to carry around an additional weight of a bulky camera

Lauren, I love my Nikon camera, but you are right, carrying a large camera everywhere is difficult. My Samsung Galaxy is old, is this one a newer model? I clicked the link, but I can't tell. Thanks for sharing.
Yes they looks the same as the older Galaxys, but the avant is different, it depends on which model you have though..
i am the same, my cell is never far from me, I do have a fancy camera but never use it
I think the whole uploading part is what annoys me the most. It gets good pics, but actually GETTING to the pictures takes forever!! ๐
I haven't used a camera in years but would like to upgrade my phone for a newer model with better features. Your pictures are great!
You should upgrade.. you would LOVE it!!
My phone is always my go-to… I don't even own a nice camera anymore. If I do it is covered in dust somewhere. You are right much more convenient for so many reasons, plus they take amazing pics these days too!
haha, yeah now that I think about it my camera may be actually pretty dated considering it was from 5 years ago!!
I am exactly the same way! I almost NEVER pull out my big. heavy DSLR anymore. I actually did shoot with it a bit at my son's recent birthday party, but I ended up liking the photos I took with my iPhone just as much!
I agree, we bring it out for birthdays and holidays.. and it does take nice pics.. but I always end up using the phone way more! ๐
I use my phone all the time too! It's such a convenient way to take pictures.
And with the editing apps you can brighten them up right away! Love it!
Love, love, love the WFM plan and my new phone! It is the way to go. Yours takes fab pictures!
I was really impressed with the whole process and the service is GREAT!
I need to take more pictures on my phone. I tend to carry my camera or not take pictures at all. Thanks for the inspiration!
I am the opposite haha! Thanks for stopping over and have a great week!
Yes to all of this! I love that my phone is always with me and the iPhone camera is pretty good quality. I hardly ever use anything else!
I really think convenience is so important.. I just dont have the time to use anything but my phone! Thanks for stopping over! ๐
I always use my phone as well. People are shocked that it's taken with my phone and usually no filter is added. Love natural light!
Yes your photographs are beautiful.. I am actually surprised myself! ๐
This is such a great post. I don't know what I would do without my camera phone. You raised such great points. Sometimes, it's nice to get out the super nice camera and take some photos. But that just isn't practical in this season of life for us mommas.
Great post!
And also then family and friends want the pics like THAT moment.. and it takes me so long to upload them to my computer and then I end up forgetting about them.. and they sit stuck on the nice camera! ha!
I took a screen shot of the post on FB earlier today so that I wouldn't forget to go back and read it… And now that I read it I realize I COULD HAVE WRITTEN IT! I second all your thoughts on using my phone (I have an iPhone 5s) as my camera. On occasion I will pull out the big camera but it is rare. It is also rare that I ever forward the photos from the big camera :-/ it's just so much easier when they are on the phone!!! Great post!
I am honored that I was screen grabbed!! I do that all the time too so I remember to go back to stuff! Thanks for stopping over and have a wonderful week!!
i am right there with you, girl! i have a rebel t3 that i rarely use due to it being so annoying to carry around! i am all about the iphone pics!!
I know, my DSLR is HUGE.. and I really cant tell the difference between the pics I take with it and my phone.. I guess that says more about my photography skills! haha
I have a DSLR and I enjoy it. But sometimes it's just too much to lug around!
Yeah we bring it to disney but then we never want to lug it around the park so we always end up leaving it behind! ha!
Similar to you, my mom bought us a really good quality video camera for our wedding in 2011. We used it so rarely, it was such a waste. Smartphones are great for all the reasons you listed above. Your Samsung takes such beautiful pictures! It makes sense you wouldn't have a need for much more!
thank you! Yes I love this phone.. it really has some awesome features!
What an awesome deal! I think my phone is SO much easier and I love to share pics right away. But my husband, he loves oue Nikon camera, which I admit takes amazing pics!

Maybe if I learned more 'tricks' with the fancy camera I would enjoy using it more.. but right now the pics look the same to me!! haha!
agreed. i'm with ya… i use the phone almost exclusively now! mainly due to #1
Yes, convenience is key!!
You got nice shots there using your camera phone. I been wanting also yo use my cellphone camera in every event since dslr are so heavy.
Yes and I am not very good with them.. at least with my phone I can fix the lighting up with a few quick swipes!!
We took our kids to the tide pools and I brought our camera…then I slipped on some rocks and flew up in the air, landed on my back and dropped the camera in the water. I've used my phone ever since.
Oh my gosh!! That sounds like something that would TOTALLY happen to me!! I hope you were okay!!
the quality will never be the same, but the best camera is always the one you happen to have on you. ๐ most of my photos day to day are iphone only now.
Very true!! I also think since I dont know how to REALLY use my nice camera.. it doesnt help. haha
Well if your cellphone takes great pics, use it! ๐ My cellphone is an old-school Nokia, no camera there! I don't have a DSLR either but I've found the perfect compromise for me–a little Sony point-and-shoot that fits in my tiny purse, or in my husband's pocket. I don't think I'll ever be a smartphone person, but I do love having a little camera everywhere I go!
Sometimes I wish I never got a smartphone since it does take up a lot of my time.. I should prob put it down more! Thanks for stopping over and have a wonderful week!
I'm with you on this one! I love the idea of a fancy camera, but I'm not going to lug one around everywhere I go! My phone is all the camera I need!
Thank you for sharing with us at #MommyMeetupMondays!
So True! I have my Big Girl camera too but mainly use it for Product Reviews or something for a brand…for my 'moments' my cell phone is definitely my go to tool.
So I just have to tell you, I have been using pixlr since I read this post. And I just have to say, thank you so much!!! I love that app and my pictures (I think) are so much better. I had been searching for a way to edit my photos other than picmonkey, and pixlr has been really great for me! So, thanks again!!
That makes me so happy!! I am glad I was able to help ๐
Great post. I learned something knowledgeable. Thank you so much for sharing.
