DIY Pretend Makeup

Mila is my morning buddy. After my husband goes to work and I take Hudson to school, it is just her and I until I go to work. (which may be why she is obsessed with me) She watches me get ready every day… sitting next to me as I blow-dry my hair, and stealing makeup out of my bathroom drawers.

So she was BEYOND excited when we put together her new kid-sized vanity, an amazing Christmas gift from the best aunt and uncle ever! (thanks Heather & Jeff!!) Heather also got her a little kit full of pretend vanity products, which were super cute… but Mila broke most of the eyeshadows and blushes fairy quickly. She likes to open and close them about a MILLION times… the toys never stood a chance!

I recently cleaned out my bathroom drawers (part of my big organization resolution!) and I realized I was throwing out a lot of old eyeshadows and brushes that I knew Mila would love to play with! I’ve seen pictures of homemade play makeup using paint or nail polish… So I decided to give it a try!

I didn’t scoop out all the eyeshadows, since I didn’t feel like making a big powdery mess. All eyeshadows are poured into a tin first, then glued onto whatever dispenser they are sold in. So I just used a pair of tweezers to get in between the metal and plastic. Once you lever the tweezers underneath the metal part, it usually pops right out. (all of mine did)

Then I rinsed off all the containers and poured nail polish in each part. They were dry in just a few hours. (Make sure you let them dry in a well-ventilated area, the polish smell will be pretty strong)

I think they turned out so cute, and Mila LOVES them! It also makes getting ready much easier for me, since now she has her own area to play. (I wish I had glitter nail polishes, since I think those would have turned out awesome! I will definitely invest in some $1 Wet & Wild glittery polish the next time I do this!) So if you have a girly girl like I apparently do… try to make your own play makeup! It is super easy, your kids will love it and they are really durable!

What a great idea! The girls love getting their hair blow-dried and putting on makeup. But they might be upset when the makeup doesn't show up on their face. Does Mila care?

Love this idea! My daughter is 22mo and is forever getting into my makeup bag, every lipstick I own has been mutilated. Just a question, does your daughter try to lick the nail polishe or anything? Just worried because it’s toxic if it’s the safest thing to use?? Thanks ☺️

      at

She doesn’t try to lick it.. Not sure if there is something a little better to use out there.. if there is I can’t think of it. A little nail polish can’t hurt too much.. right? 😉
