Family Favorites: Books my Kids are Loving in August

The kids are heading back to school and I hope everyone is having a wonderful transition back! We have been really slacking with our reading this summer, but I have kicked it into high gear the past week. (you can make up for a summer of laziness in one week… right??)

Here are the books my kids have been loving this month:

Hudson:
A Treasury of Curious George
This book was given to me at Hudson’s baby shower and it is still a bedtime favorite. (Thank You Lindsay C.) This will go a few months on the book shelf and then all of a sudden Hudson will bring it out and we end up reading it for a week or two straight. It has 8 Curious George stories in it. Hudson’s two favorites are Curious George Visits a Toy Store and Curious George Goes to a Costume Party. (he laughs at that one EVERY TIME, even though he has the story memorized after the amount of times we have read it!) This is an awesome book to have, and right now it is less than $9 on Amazon, and that is for the hardcover version!

Splat the Cat and the Duck with No Quack
We have a few of these ‘Splat the Cat’ books and they are great for early readers. Hudson loves books he can read all by himself, and while this one does have some tougher parts for him, he gets good practice sounding out words.

Mila:
Where is Baby’s Birthday Cake?
Mila got this book for her birthday back in February, but she is starting to really enjoy it now. It is a lift-the-flap book so she loves finding all the surprises! There is a page that has 5 bears hiding behind wrapping paper which is her favorite. She like to count the bears and we end up going back to that page at least a few times while we read it.

Another Monster at the End of This Book
This is a continuation of the classic Monster at the End of This Book (which we also have and LOVE)  Mila has been OBSESSED with this book lately. She cannot get enough of it, which is unusual for her, since she prefers books with flaps, or textures for her to feel and play with while reading. This is just a regular book, but she makes me read it to her all the time.

We are looking for some good new books, especially ones that will challenge Hudson a bit. I would love suggestions!!

Welcome to the Working Mom Blogger group on FB! My son, now 11, used to love the Fly Guy series when he was in First grade. He's not a big reader, so those books may not be a challenge for Hudson (who looks like he IS a reader!) but it is a fun series.

I read the Magic Tree House books to my older two kiddos (ages 4 and 5). They really enjoy them, and I love that they're learning about history in the process.

I will go check out those Magic Tree House books now, and I have heard good things about the iPad version of Monster… I am going to give it a try… I think Mila would LOVE an 'animated' version of it. 🙂

My daughter loves her lift the flap books! And of course, Curious George is one of her favorites too!

Yes, but I do hate when they rip the flaps off… then get annoyed the next time they go to read it! (or is that just my crazy kid?)

Fun ones! I like those Splat the Cat Leveled Readers. Great for younger kids to try to read independently.

The level readers are the best, now they also have star wars ones that my son really gets into also.
