Break from Reality

I just spent 5 whole days doing basically whatever I wanted and it was amazing. I took a break from work, cooking, cleaning… and even blogging! (gasp!!) It was my son’s birthday and we decided to have a little staycation at a motel on the beach.

I took off Wednesday, Thursday, & Friday from work, which is just long enough to feel like a got a break… but short enough that I’m still in the loop and don’t have to take a whole afternoon to catch up.

My husband went to the Keys for a few days at the beginning of the week for lobster mini-season. They caught 90 lobsters! Pretty awesome.

Lobster Mobsters!
I got to spend the whole, amazing day on Thursday celebrating my sweet son’s 6th birthday. I don’t remember the last b-day of his that we spend the WHOLE day together, since he was always in daycare and would beg me to go to school on his birthday so he could have a party. Now, since he is in summer camp, he didn’t mind missing it. We started celebrating as soon as he got up and didn’t stop until waaaay past his bedtime when he finally passed out. He even got his very own ‘smash’ cake, since he has been begging for one forever. (we watch America’s Funniest Home Videos way too much!) I made it with Cool Whip and sprinkles and he had a blast smashing his face in it.

Then it was off to the beach to spend the rest of the weekend with friends and family.  A bunch of us got rooms at this little motel that is right on the beach. It’s sort of become a family hangout at least a few times a year! I took some pictures the first day and night, only on my phone though… I was so bummed I forgot our good camera! After that… I don’t think I even took my phone out of the room for the rest of the weekend.

My sweeties
We had a small beach birthday party for Hudson on Saturday and I didn’t even take ONE picture! I’m sure I will regret it later, but I just wanted to ENJOY myself. Without worrying about my phone, or getting everyone in a group for a picture. I sat with friends I have known for 20 years and watched our kids play together. We all got in the water and played in the sand and just had GREAT time! We sang ‘Happy Birthday’ with popcicles and THEN ate pizza. (since the pizza guy was about 2 hours late… sorry to my starving guests!!)

I ate and drank whatever I wanted. We woke up to watch the sunrise and spent hours floating in the ocean. It wasn’t a long trip, or a far one (we were only about 30 minutes away from our house!) but the memories we made are priceless and it reminded me how THANKFUL and GRATEFUL I am to have family and close friends that live right around the corner. A big THANK YOU to everyone who helped make Hudson’s 6th Birthday so special! Now… back to reality!

This makes me all the more excited that we have a plan at last to escape in the last week of August! I have ALWAYS wanted to do a summer escape from the city and we never manage it. This year we took the time, did the research and off we go! I have the calendar marked and I can hardly wait to ESCAPE REALITY!

I think staying at a hotel makes it feel like a 'vacation' even when its right around the corner! (and being steps away from the beach doesnt hurt either!)

It was funny since he never enjoyed smash cakes when he was a baby… but now that he is older he is all about making a mess! 😉
