I Dread My Kids Haircuts

                              

I dread getting my kids haircut. It’s not because they hate haircuts or anything. I am lucky they both tolerate trimmings very well. The problem with haircuts is that my children seem to age exponentially with each lock of hair that falls to the ground.

I am not sure why or how this happens, but I am not making it up. We waited a long time (too long.. I can admit that now) to cut my son Hudson’s hair. He just kept growing one long ‘tail’ that was covering his face, but nothing on the rest of his head. I thought if we left it alone it would fill out. It didn’t and I finally gave in to my husband’s begging to cut our child’s crazy hair.

When we did, it was worse than I even imagined. The haircut looked great, MUCH better than before. But he looked so GROWN UP. When those first whisps are gone, our babies start to look a little older.

It doesn’t get better, either. The older they get, the more mature each chop and cut makes them. My two nephews have the BEST hair… that can actually be styled… and when they get a fresh cut, I swear they age 5 years to me.

So when it was time to cut Mila’s hair… I was dreading it. I lied to family and friends saying I didn’t think she needed a cut. Her bangs were so long she would often end up chomping on her hair along with her meals. She would walk into things and I would quickly say, “Oh, she’s so clumsy!” But we all knew she couldn’t see with all that darn hair in her face. My son even tried to reason with me. “Mom, Mila really needs a haircut, her hair gets stuck to the boogers on her nose.” I mean, the kid had a point.

                                

So last month, I reluctantly agreed to take my 15 month old to get her first haircut. She sat quietly, playing with a little toy they gave her. I, on the other hand, gasped and huffed through the whole thing. I made little comments, “Wow, that seems like SOOOO much…” and “Her bangs shouldn’t be too short!” The stylist wasn’t fazed by me. I’m sure she is used to it.

                               

I walked in with a baby and left with a toddler. The comments started soon after. “I love her haircut, she LOOKS SO MUCH OLDER.” “What a BIG GIRL.” Ugh. Heartbreaking.

Sweet girl looks adorable with her new ‘do, but every time I look at those short little curls bouncing behind her… it reminds me of how fast our babies grow up. And how I’m just a few months away from feeling the haircut blues again.
