It’s time for Cinco de Mayo… one of my FAVORITE holidays. Now if you want to read about the true meaning behind this day & how it came to be, click right here.
But if you want to know how to make a killer margarita to celebrate with, then you have come to the right place! My favorite margarita in the entire world is the Prickly Pear Margarita from an amazing Fort Lauderdale restaurant named Canyon.
It’s dark and mysterious, like a canyon. Get it? |
This tiny eatery is packed each and every night, and for good reason. It has delicious food and a white chocolate bread pudding to die for. But the restaurant is best know for its prickly pear margaritas. I have no idea how they make them, the recipe is TOP SECRET. All they will tell me is that they peel prickly pears and marinate them in 100% agave tequila for 3 days.
However, after years of trying to imitate the recipe, I finally have come pretty close.
We usually order Cheri’s Prickly Pear Syrup online, however recently it has become more popular so you may be able to find similar Prickly Pear syrups at a liquor store.
Prickly Pear Margarita:
- 2 ounces of good Silver/or white (blanco) Tequila (that is just a little more than one shot, I actually do 2 shots (3 oz) when I make it, but I am a boozer)
- 1 ounce of Prickly Pear Syrup
- 1 ounce Cointreau (you can sub this out for triple sec, but it tastes WAY better with the Cointreau in my opinion)
- 1/2 oz fresh lime juice
- a SPLASH of orange juice
Shake it all up and strain into a martini glass if you want it ‘Canyon’ style, or just toss into a red solo cup with ice if you want it MY style! Salt or no salt… that is up to you, but don’t forget a lime wedge! Cheers!
I have a bunch of other fun Cinco de Mayo recipes and free party printables on my Pinterest page!

My prickly pear recipe is similar- 2 parts tequila, 2 parts fresh squeezed lime juice, 1 part Cointreau, 1 part prickly pear syrup. Glass rimed with Tajin seasoning . The Tajin makes the difference .

That margarita sounds DELICIOUS! I think this is going to be the summer that margaritas come back into my life. I even included three in my cinco de mayo post last week (though I wish I’d seen this before that post, because it definitely would have been included). Thanks for sharing the recipe, I can’t wait to try it out!

Lauren says
I do know how they do it, but it is a LONG process that involves soaking the prickly pears in tequila for like 24 hours or something… but we did LOTS of research and this is pretty close!
