I am lucky to live near two fantastic farmers markets that are open year round. I love going with the kids because it is always a mini adventure.
There is always something new to try and the experience is more personable than going to a big box supermarket. I find the produce stays fresher longer, since most of it is grown locally (or in the state) so it is not shipped as far. I also like knowing I am helping to support small & local farmers.
Yesterday we decided to go to the Flamingo Road Nursery Farmers Market, because we hadn’t been there in awhile and Hudson wanted a smoothie. (when we got there though he decided on a banana instead, hence no smoothie pics!)
They have a huge nursery and a small market near the back that is full of fruits and veggies. On top of that, they sell local breads, honey, salsas, cheeses, eggs, dairy… you name it!
After we shop, we usually do a walk through the nursery. Mila & Hudson go crazy looking at all the flowers and plants. Hudson asks what EVERY FLOWER IS, and if an (unlucky) employee is nearby they always take the time answer his questions! Yesterday after a woman explained what these little yellow daisies were, he asked if he could pick one for his mom, and she cut one off right there and handed it to him! So sweet!
My other FAVORITE Farmers Market is SW Ranches Farmers Market, the owner Sheila is AWESOME and her salsa is AMAZING! I will do another blog post about her in the future.
There are tons of resources out there to help you find a Famers Market in your area. The USDA has a Famer’s Market search engine. You can also search for markets on the Local Harvest website.
So the next time you are looking for something fun and free to do with the family, check out a Famers Market and support local growers!
Aww, what a nice family outing (educational too), I need to make it a point to do stuff like this!! Thanks for sharing.
Yes its easy to forget how kids love to do the simplest things! I always plan these elaborate adventures, then they will have the most fun doing stuff I wouldn't even think of as a 'kid' activity!
