My job has its perks… like meeting David Beckham

My job in TV news is a crazy one, but it can have its perks.

A big one is food. People are ALWAYS bringing food to newsrooms. You name it, we’ve had it delivered here. Food trucks, ice cream, chocolates, pastries… I could go on and on. It’s bad for the diet, but most of the time the treats brought in are yummy and so worth it!

Last week, the Miami Heat brought boxes full of playoff t-shirts for employees. Just cause.
My family and I have had the opportunity to go to TONS of free events thanks to comp tickets sent to the station or because sales got a bunch to give out.  Monster truck shows, Disney on Ice, local fairs, museums, home shows. You get it.
I have also had the chance to meet some amazing people.
But what happened this week takes the cake. The dreamy, delicious DAVID BECKHAM cake… to be exact.
We had been hearing rumblings of this interview for weeks… and it was all kept very quiet.

Beckham was here to talk to our political reporter, Michael Putney, about his big plans to bring major league soccer to Miami. There has been some back and forth about where the stadium will be built… blah blah blah. You don’t care about that. Let’s get to the good stuff…

Michael asked if someone could put some powder on Mr. Beckham, and BOOM… there I was. (Thanks to another manager Stephanie, who wasn’t as excited as me about the whole thing!) As I un-shined his perfect forehead, I got to talk to him. Like for real, talk to David Beckham. I told him this would go down as a very memorable day at work and I also told him the newsroom doesn’t normally look this good cause the ladies dressed up super cute for his arrival. He started laughing and then I told him I had never been so nervous to put powder on someone before. I asked him if he would mind taking a quick picture, and he didn’t. He was really nice about it, especially since I asked my boss to take more than one. (Yes, my awesome news director took that pic)

I stayed in the studio with the other managers to watch the taping. (which airs this weekend on This Week in South Florida) At the end of the interview, we went up to ask Beckham what he wanted to do. Did he need to leave right away? He told us he could stay a bit and say hi to people in the newsroom. We decided I would walk him around and that Bill (my boss) would take pictures. (so at this point I’m like besties with Beckham. You know… we planned stuff together… like where we would walk.) When I walked out of the studio ESCORTING DAVID BECKHAM, I knew I would be getting some crap from co-workers. (& I SURE did, but it was SO worth it!)

This is the moment I realized I was about to powder David Beckham’s face!

My boss took the pic, then said ‘Let’s do another one, there is a ladder behind you!’

A few interview shots

Group shot!

He signed jerseys

He hugged kids, seriously how awesome is this guy?
Michelle & I had been chatting about our Beckham hopes and dreams all morning, so when I had the chance to shuffle him to her desk… I did it!!

We snuck a few photo bombs before Beckham was like ‘It’s okay, I’ll take a picture with you guys if you want.’ Then I said, ‘Yo, I’ll tell you what I want, what I really, really want.’ (No, I didn’t, but I totally should have)
Behind the scenes of the group photo
Everyone has been asking me what he was like, and I have to say he was really nice. I have worked in news for awhile, I interned at CNN New York and met plenty of famous people and to be honest, most of them are distant and they try to be nice, but you can tell it’s a FAKE nice. (and many don’t even try) Not David Beckham. He was GENUINELY nice and he made everyone at the station comfortable. He never acted like he was in a rush or needed to get out of there. He shook hands and let people take selfies with him. He is a huge star, known world-wide. He could have walked in through the back entrance, done the interview, and left with only the studio crew seeing him. (and it would have been totally understandable) But he took the time to make everyone’s day, and was a real class act.
Thanks, David! You rocked our world!
