I have been hearing a lot of buzz about Bulletproof® coffee. I first learned about it at a friends house, when a firefighter was talking about how great it was. He claimed it made him feel full and energized… but the part that really caught my attention was that he claimed it helped you burn fat. Say what? One of my favorite drinks can help me burn fat? Then a friend on twitter brought it up a few weeks later, so I decided to give it a try.
The original Bulletproof® coffee recipe was created by Dave Asprey, and he has a very specific way you are supposed to make it. He even created his own coffee to be used for this very purpose. He has a video showing how to make the coffee and explains his reasoning behind why it works to burn fat and give you energy. (and in case you haven’t figured it out by now, it is copyrighted)
Here is the original recipe:
- At least 2tbs Kerrygold grass-fed butter
- 1-2tbs of MCT oil (not coconut oil)
- 2 cups of hot coffee brewed with low-toxin beans (like Bulletproof® Upgraded Coffee)
Many copycat versions say you can use coconut oil, claiming that MCT oil is simply a more refined version of coconut oil. The original recipe specifically says you should NOT use coconut oil. I am not going to go into all the specifics here about the difference between the two, but for my purposes, I felt fine simply using coconut oil.
As you can see in my picture, the coffee I used here is not organic, but it was BOGO at Publix, so whatever.
After you brew the coffee, you put it in a blender, add the butter and oil then blend the crap out of it. (I did one tablespoon of each, since I was only making one cup of coffee) I drank it on an empty stomach, like it says to. It tasted pretty good, considering I am kind of a snob when it comes to how my coffee tastes. (check out my coffee creamer post) Near the end of my cup, I started getting a little grossed out. It is frothy, but an oily frothy. (does that even make sense?)

The white stuff is coconut oil, the yellow stuff is butter, and I feel ill just looking at this picture. |
I drank it up and off I went to spin class. By the time I pulled up to the gym, I felt like I had a rock in my stomach. I felt so ill, and the thought of the oil slick in my tummy made me want to puke. I did have energy, but no different than when I just drink my coffee regularly. I felt gross all day long! I have to admit, I really wasn’t hungry, even around 11am. ( I drank the coffee at 7:30am) I made some food, only with the hopes that the sick feeling would go away. (it didn’t) I looked into it a little more, and some sites suggest easing into this butter coffee… starting with a half tablespoon of each at first. Wish I would have seen that sooner!
I decided to try it again two days later. I used a little bit less butter and coconut oil. I didn’t feel sick this time, but it also didn’t keep me full as long. I told my husband about this and he said while you DO burn more fat by drinking caffeine on an empty stomach, he thought the whole thing sounded bogus. (but he’s only a registered dietitian with a masters in Food and Nutrition… I mean… what does he know?)
In conclusion, while I know MANY people swear by this, I think I will keep my butter on my bread and out of my coffee. I didn’t drink it long enough to see if it really did burn fat or help me lose a few pounds.
Have you tried to make Bulletproof® coffee before? I would love to hear your experiences with it! Should I give it another chance?

I've tried coconut oil in my coffee before but this is the first time I've heard of Bulletproof coffee. After reading your post I think I will pass. If I want something buttery I will go back to Harry Potter world and get another butter beer! lol Interesting though!
Now I want a butter beer. At 1pm. 😉
I'm not a coffee drinker– but this looks great!! 🙂
How do you stay so peppy without coffee?? I need your secret!
Interesting. I am not sure I want to try it.. lol. I wonder if we could just stick with whole cream? lol. Thick and yummy!

Yes, I am sticking with regular creamer from here on out!! Thanks for stopping by! 🙂
haha! We just moved to a new country & I cannot read anything in the grocery store. I was talking to someone from my husband's work & told them what I was buying for coffee creamer & they were like holy moly you aren't playing around lol as i use 100% whole organic cream! 😛 So delicious & you just need a dab 😉
Ewww is my first thought. Not sure I could stomach that one and I'm willing to try anything.
Yeah, I don't think I could try it again if I wanted to, it's just oily. That's the best way to explain it. lol
Oh wow! This looks great.
Let me know how you like it!! Just start off with smaller amounts.. 😉
This is how I drink my coffee & I LOVE it! You have to start off with a small amount as if you aren't used to consuming a lot of coconut oil which can help, uh, clean out your system it will make you very sick. I started off with just a tiny bit & worked up my way up. Now I just put a dollop of unsalted organic butter & a dollop of coconut oil. I also sprinkle my coffee with cinnamon & raw cacao just because they are good for you. I also sweeten with a tablespoon of local honey for my allergies. My coffee is a serious powerhouse! LOL I will say the method of not eating anything behind bulletproof coffee is BS & no one should listen to it. As I was looking into it I came across this article: http://butterbeliever.com/better-than-bulletproof-coffee/ It really spoke to me and it is what I base my "bulletproof" recipe off of. I drink my coffee then have a protein pack breakfast like an egg scramble or some oats of some kind. Great post! Btw, I don't go to all the trouble to blend mine lol usually at 6am I don't have the patience for it 😉 I also want to add that I dont' drink caffeinated coffee & I went a week without doing the butter/coconut oil thing & my energy level was in the hole, it was awful. So, when you get used to it it really does work wonders!
Yeah the blending thing was really a pain. Maybe I will try just adding a little bit of coconut oil in. I don't think I can bring myself to add butter again! haha… I overdid it on my first try!
I've heard about this too…have you tried oil pulling? I couldn't do that either! So nauseating. I am a total coffee creamer snob too…and totally trying to cut my Amaretto creamer every morning. I don't know how you eat clean with your kids and schedule…but maybe you could clue me in on your meal prep? I am struggling, especially with these late HEAT broadcasts and early mornings…
I was totally going to try oil pulling, but then I decided to pass. (I think it was soon after this little coffee experiment!!) I TRY to eat clean, but I def have a long way to go. A lot of meal prep is involved now that you mention it, I will start working on a post about it! 🙂
add flour and a couple eggs u get a dame good cake
Hahaha! GREAT point Michelle! Thanks for stopping by!
Doesn't sound very good to me. I could see using a little coconut oil but I'm not much of a butter fan. =)
Yeah, it was pretty gross! I do add a bit of coconut oil in my first cup of the day now… its good!
It actually sounds kind of yummy to me. I don't think I'd want to use much coconut oil. But butter in coffee sounds yummy! However, it sounds more like a dessert kind of thing than a fat burning kind of thing to me. Then again, some of my favorite foods are fake health foods. 🙂
I've heard of butter in the coffee too, but its a first I heard about bullet proof coffee!! I'm a coffee snob too, but Im curious to know what this tastes like too, even if I might regret it??
