Free Fun

I am ALWAYS looking for fun stuff to do with the kids. (aren’t we all) Because of their ages, my expectations for these family outings aren’t very high, which is why I usually try to look for FREE events. That way, if they decide for whatever reason they feel like going home, (or if I am on the verge of a breakdown) then there is no guilt about leaving since we didn’t waste any money.

All this stuff was free (even the cotton candy, the biggest score… in my opinion)

It always surprises me how many of my friends say to me “How do you always find this random, free stuff?” It is obviously no secret, (see there’s this little thing called the internet), so this isn’t really a ‘how to find free stuff’ post, its more like a ‘here’s a reminder that it’s really easy to find fun, free stuff to do’ post. It’s tough on Saturday morning, to take the time to look for events, when the kids are running around and all you want is just ONE warm sip of coffee. So if you take a few minutes to search around on Friday, you will have your weekend set in no time.

I start with the local paper, it’s the most obvious place. (the online versions) Usually under the ‘things to do’ section you can find a kids event tab. I am lucky since I work at a news station I get TONS of press releases sent to me, and thrown in with murderer mugshots and Justin Bieber’s latest arrest report, I get lots of event emails from local cities. Free movies at the park, family festivals, carnivals, art fairs, all of these things are great experiences for kids. But you don’t need a press release. Just choose a few cities closest to you, get on their website and find the community events calendar. Done and done. You will be surprised how many things you will find going on.
Another good tool is social media.  You know you spend all day on facebook and twitter anyway. I have found a bunch of local mommy groups on facebook that are super helpful. (mamarama is my favorite!) Post a simple “looking for something fun to do with the kids this weekend” and you will quickly get a dozen answers (at least… and then somehow a FB fight will breakout between the moms, which is always fun to watch)
Have a great weekend, and let me know your favorite ways to find free events… just leave a comment!
