Only Child Day

“Hudson, be quiet your sister is sleeping!”
“Hudson, I can’t help you I’m nursing your sister.”
“Hudson, don’t pick her up that way, she’s just a baby.”
“Hudson, you can’t feed your sister Twizzlers!”

Since having our second baby things are definitely different for my husband and I. But I think the biggest changes have been for my son.
Hudson was an only child for nearly 5 years. He was the king of the castle, getting a big say in what we did on the weekends, where we went to eat, and so on.
Since he is older, he has been very understanding with most of the changes surrounding his little sister. He knows that she is a baby and sometimes needs more attention and help than he does. He has learned to take a back seat to her needs, often offering to help in anyway he can.

Even the BEST big brother needs a break!

While my husband and I were off for spring break we decided to have our first ‘Only Child Day’ with him.
We have taken him out on little ‘dates’ with just one of us, while the other stays with the baby, but this was our first day with just the two of us and him. (because to be totally honest, on the rare occasions that we DO get a sitter, we prefer to leave BOTH kids with them!)

He decided he wanted to go to the beach, so that is what we did. He didn’t have to yell to get our attention, or call our names 10 times before telling us something. Our focus was entirely on him, and it was really, really nice. He went boogie boarding, dug a massive hole in the sand, we went on a tire swing, and made some friends on a playground there. After the beach, we went out to lunch (we rarely eat out with the baby now, she’s too crazy) and he got to order whatever he wanted. (mac & cheese with french fries, grapes, and a ‘make your own’ ice cream sundae with an obscene amount of sprinkles)

By the time we were heading home, we felt reconnected with our sweet boy & Hudson actually said he had missed his sister. It wasn’t a long day, but it was perfect and a tradition we will continue, with both of our children.

Such a good idea! The other sibling gets lost in the craziness so easily 🙂

Thanks, Stacey!! Esp since he was my only baby for so long, it took me awhile to get into the swing of making sure they were BOTH taken care of!
