I get a lot of questions over my coffee posts on my Insta stories. My coffee routine is a bit complicated and I’m okay with that. I love using a french press. I think it makes the coffee taste SO much better and since I only drink one cup in the morning the single serving is a perfect option for me. Over time, I have found that a lot of the nutritional boosters I was adding to my smoothies can be just as easily put into my coffee, without sacrificing the taste.
I switch it up, making my coffee a different way depending on my mood or what ingredients I feel I need to add. I am going to break down the different add-ons I use and why and share a few examples of how I use them.
Healthy Add-Ins to Give Your Coffee a Boost
MCT Oil or Coconut Oil: I started adding coconut oil to my coffee a few years ago after trying Bulletproof coffee. I couldn’t stomach the butter in there, but I really enjoyed the coconut oil flavor. I figured the healthy fats were good for me and I felt fuller longer so I kept doing it. Last year I switched to using MCT oil. I already was familiar with the Bulletproof products and after learning more about it through the Bulletproof podcast, I decided to order some MCT oil from them online and I loved it. It is supposed to help suppress hunger, improve brain function and aid in weight loss. I don’t know if any of that is true, but keep putting it in my coffee. They sell it at Whole Foods now, along with a million other types of MCT oil now. I don’t know the difference between any of them, I just stick to the one I started with.
Collagen Peptides: I forget why I started adding this to my coffee, but I have been doing it for awhile now. When I stop using this for a few weeks, I feel like my skin and hair starts looking dull. It could just be a placebo effect since I am a total sucker, but I swear I notice a difference. Collagen can help your muscles recover after a workout and promote flexible joints, support hair growth, improve skin elasticity and more. Disclaimer: This is made with collagen from pasture-raised cows. I don’t eat meat since I don’t like the taste, but this is NOT vegetarian.
Adaptogens: Adaptogens are all-natural herbs and powders that help regulate hormones and more. There is a wide variety of adaptogens and they all do something different. This article from Mind, Body, Green has an amazing breakdown of all the different kinds and what they do. I like to mix up what I use. I have cordyceps, maca and ashwagandha.
Cacao: A sprinkle of this adds a ton of anti-oxidants. Cacao powder also has iron, magnesium and calcium and is a natural anti-depressant.
When I make my coffee I always add MCT oil and collagen. Then I pick either one adaptogen or cacao. Finally, I add a splash of half and half and froth it up! (You guys know I love my milk frother, this one is my current favorite)
What do you like to put in your coffee?
I put collagen in my coffee and have tried coconut oil! I need to try MCT oil and make this bullet proof coffee! This was super helpful! Thank you for sharing
I am not really a coffee drinker, but I love these ideas! Coconut oil makes literally everything better!
I don’t drink coffee any more, but I wish I knew this when I did! Do you think these additions would be just as tasty in tea?
I love tea as well, I have added maca to my green tea but I do taste it a little bit but I dont mind the taste. 🙂
I never thought of adding coconut oil to my coffee, which is silly cause I love iced coconut milk lattes! Thanks for sharing babe! xo, Brittany Nicole | http://www.theblistblog.com
Great list! I always love adding a healthy boost to my meals and beverages!
You gotta sneak it in where you can, right?
These are all such great ideas! Coffee is my weakness, and I love the idea of adding in some of these healthy ingredients to make it better for you.
Thank you! I love my coffee situation, and none of these add ins change the taste very much! woohoo!
I too have complicated coffee routine, but I enjoy it! These are great add-ins and I didn’t know many of them.
I hope you give them a try! 🙂
I’ve heard so many good things about collagen peptides! I need to add this to my coffee, too. I figured that it can’t hurt, and I need my daily coffee!
I swear I notice a difference when I use it and since it doesn’t change the taste at all I figure what the heck?
Great idea on the cacao! I have some of the Cacao Magic superfood blend from Philosophie. Have you heard of that?
I have heard of it, but I haven’t tried it yet! I need to check it out! 🙂
My favorite add in is coconut oil, I cook with coconut oil and put it on everything
Mmm…cacao powder would give coffee a fabulous boost of yummy flavor! Thank you for all the great new ideas for flavoring coffee in delicious unique ways. 🙂
Who knew so much more could be done with coffee? Recently I tried French Vanilla spoons that are edible spoons to stir your coffee!
I’m not sure if this is weird but I put a few drops of essential oil to my coffee every once in a while especially if I need to relax. Anyway, your article is really well-written and I enjoyed reading it! 🙂

Nicky
