My kids are crib haters. And I am over it. Last week, we had to get Mila a bed, since she was diving out of her crib every night. We decided to just get her a mattress and put it on the floor, since the thought of buying her a big girl bed gives me anxiety. (not to mention the fact that she will probably roll right off of it)
I hear other moms who keep their kids in cribs FOREVER, and I am SO jealous! Hudson was 2 when we started finding him asleep on the couch after making a late night escape from his crib. After about a week of him doing this, I realized this was not just a phase and we bought him a big boy bed.
I bought him a ‘full’ with a modern, simple bed from Ikea. Those toddler beds are so small, they just seem like a waste of money to me. I remember seeing my little man all bundled up in what seemed like an enormous bed, and thinking he was such a big boy.
He was such a little guy!! |
But Mila is only 19 months old. I seriously cannot believe she is out of her crib. A few people suggested I get some sort of net, cage-type thing.. but I know my daughter. She will tear her way through that thing in 5 minutes.
Her new mattress on the floor, we are ‘borrowing’ Hudson’s comforter for now. |
So we are officially a ‘crib-free’ home. I used the same crib for both kids (since I loved it so much) and soon it will be sitting at the end of the driveway for bulk pick-up. (it’s a drop-side crib, so I can’t give it away or anything since they are illegal now… yes… I am an ex-illegal crib owner)
My husband and I have decided our family is complete, so there is no longer a need for a crib. Soon there will be no more high chair… then no more diapers… all those sweet little baby items will disappear one by one. Which is so, so sad. Almost as sad as the fact that I have been sleeping on a mattress on the floor with my 19 month old every night, since she not only hates cribs, she also hates mattresses on the floor.

We are finally saying goodbye to our last crib because we gave them "big kid beds" as a reward for saying goodbye to diapers. Our four children are three (almost 4) years old. We were lucky not to have the safety issues. I imagine now that you are crib-free, you will enjoy not having to lean over the crib to pull your little ones out!

That is so awesome that your kids stayed that long! It is so hard when they are this young, since they usually arent ready for all the 'freedom' a big kid bed allows. (but you are right, my back appreciates it! ha!)

This is funny to me because we're trying to figure out if our girl will stay in her bed if we take away her crib! She's only 12 months but I want to start her on Montessori! I'm sure she'll be tired of her crib soon enough like your little one!
Lauren says
You can still start her in school while she is in a crib, right? She will get used to the nap mats there if that is your concern. 😉
Tarynn Playle says
She's so young! You have a little escape artist, LOL! My daughter was 2 1/2 when we got her a full sized bed, and that was only because we needed the crib for her brother. I agree, the toddler beds are kind of dumb-and she fell out of her bed plenty of times, which is why we have a huge cushion on her floor. Maybe a mattress on the floor would have been the way to go for us too… Now this makes me wonder if my son is going to start climbing out of his crib soon…after all, he is the climber of the family.
Lauren says
I know it, and it is so annoying, since she walks right out of her room when she wants. I will hear her wandering around at 3am yelling 'Moooom.. mama… mommmmm??" haha

Ahhhhh…. Is it bad I'm still happy my two and a half year old is still I'm her crib? Gunna make.her live in that thing until she climbs outta the thing lol…
Lauren says
I would SO do the same thing.. and you are very lucky that she stays put!!

I totally understand, my daughter hated the crib too. It's sad especially when you spend so much money on an expensive crib, now we co-sleeping.
Lauren says
Yup, I end up on that mattress with her now almost every night 😉

My daughter is 2 and she sleeps in MY bed because she hates the crib. I sympathize! We are in the process of selling our house so we decided once we move we will convert her crib to a bed. It is so sad to realize how fast they grow up 🙁 she's been done with the high chair for a couple months now too. She's forcing me to let her grow up way faster than I'm ready to!! 😉
Lauren says
I know, its so crazy how fast it happens! Thanks for stopping by! 😉
Nicole McGregor says
at least you have her bed up against the wall… that totally saved my daughter more times than not!

We have a drop side crib here too. It's on our 4th child and it will, most likely, not be used for another baby. We are adopting two 4 year old girls. It's exciting and sad to see our kids grow up, it all goes so quickly. There are many memories of them in their crib. I hope you have a photo…it's smaller to store anyway. 🙂
Lauren says
Yes I have lots of crib photos, that is a good point I never thought of! And congrats on your growing family!! 🙂

You know- my little sister wanted to be just like me. She wanted to be out of her crib early to be like her big sis….. aweeee. I see a pattern. LOVE THIS!
Lauren says
I think you are right, she is always trying to keep up with her big bro!

How do you decide when to let go of items? We're done with the crib and highchair but I can't part with them. I still also have all of our no longer needed baby clothes.
Lauren says
I still have her clothes, since I have kept only the cutest stuff and Im hoping to give it to either one of my 2 best friends when they decide to have kids, the crib and high chair takes up too much space in the garage according to my hubby, so that was that! ha!

Oh man…this is headed my way fast and I dont wanna… My twins will be 2 1/2 in November and they still sleep in their crib together…they started crawling out a while ago and even though I have big boy beds for them, I didn't wanna do the transition yet, so I showed them that I can see them on the baby monitor and not,to climb out because they can get hurt. I had to go in in the middle,of the escape a few times to prove I was watching…and then Ethan got hurt one time (not serious but enough to prove mommy right) and ive had no issues since. So until I really have to, I'm waiting as long as possible haha! Then it'll be Luke's turn to move into the crib. He's almost 11 months old and still sleeps in the pack n play in my room until he gets scooped into bed to snuggle a boob lol. I hope you don't have to sleep on a floor mattress much longer and it all goes smooth! They grow so fast!!!
Lauren says
I know it! I am SOOO jealous that your twins are still in their cribs! I'm sure when the time comes their transition will be a smooth one since they will be ready. 😉

Congrats on being crib free. My 9 month old is a crib hater too. She will not sleep for long in her's. I think the mattress on the floor is a great idea because toddler beds are a joke lol Thanks for sharing with us at Mommy needs a time out thursday.
Lauren says
Thank you for taking the time to come on over and comment!! 😉

They are SO cute!

We went through a week or so where our daughter was climbing out of the crib, and then a week of hysteria with the big girl bed (mattress on the floor). We finally put her back in the crib and she's been fine. This was probably a month ago. I actually wrote about it: http://www.mommysanest.com/2014/09/transition-to-the-big-kid-bed-1/.
Also FWIW, the crib nets are now also illegal — I was all about putting a net on that crib, but no dice.
